About
Anne Hara designs jewelry incorporating traditional Japanese techniques and materials.
Her collection begins from a love and appreciation of Japanese art and craftsmanship. She pulls inspiration from the Japanese belief that there is beauty in transience and life's cycle of growth and decay.
Her pieces feature textured, fluid lines and forms created with mitsuro, a traditional Japanese wax made from beeswax and pine resin. Japanese people have made jewelry using this wax for thousands of years.
Like with many classic arts, making jewelry with mitsuro is less and less common, even in Japan. Anne Hara's jewelry brings the traditional technique into unique, textile pieces.
"When warmed, mitsuro wax becomes soft and pliable. When cold, it's unforgivingly brittle. I have to listen to the wax to understand how it wants to be pulled and formed in that moment. The wax always changes. In this way, mitsuro is the perfect medium to capture the fleeting unfolding of life."
